On Feb. 23,1939, Walt Disney received a special Academy Award for the animated film "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." Walt Disney received one statuette and seven miniature statuettes from Shirley Temple at the 11th Academy Awards. Based on a German fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, it was the first color, full-length animated feature in motion picture history. In 1997, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was one of only two animated films to rank in the American Film Institute's list of the 100 greatest American films of all time, the other being Disney's "Fantasia."
