Matterhorn at Disneyland Park:

Winter is here, and some of you may be hearing the swish-swish of skis sliding down a snow-covered mountain-even if only in your head. At the Disneyland Park, there is a mountain range,it's called the Matterhorn!

Here are some things you might not know about this monument to Alpine adventure:

1...A Disneyland icon since 1959, the Matterhorn was part of the first major expansion to take place at Disneyland Park since the park's debut in 1955. The Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction opened on June 14, 1959, along with the Disneyland Monorail and the Submarine Voyage.

2...The Matterhorn Bobsleds was the first roller coaster in the world to employ a tubular steel track and an electronic dispatch system which enabled more than one car at a time to be on the track.

3...The Disneyland Matterhorn was built to 1/100th scale of the original Matterhorn, or 147 feet versus the 14,700 feet of the original.

4...The Matterhorn has been the highest point in Disneyland Park since 1959. It is the second highest point in the Disneyland Resort, behind the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, which stands at 183 feet tall.(California Adventure Park)

5...The attraction was inspired by the live-action Disney adventure film, "Third Man on the Mountain," which starred James MacArthur and Michael Rennie as mountaineers. The movie was filmed in Switzerland, on and around the real Matterhorn.

6...Guests who look quickly while whizzing through the Matterhorn caverns may spot mountaineering supplies and other evidence of the "Wells Expedition." These scenic details are a tribute to the late Frank Wells, who was President and Chief Operating Officer of the Walt Disney Company from 1984 until his death in 1994. Wells was an experienced mountain climber and skier.

7...There is a half court for basketball inside the Matterhorn. For cast members only!

One of the best attractions at the Disneyland Resort...Dr Lee

Side note...I have two daughters, both were cast members, my oldest, Kimberly, now 28,was an attraction hostess on "it's a small world"(trainer),Storybook, guest controll on parades and Matterhorn.

Ghirardelli shop in Disney California Adventure :

Chocolate samples will replace free tortillas when a new Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate shop opens in Disney California Adventure.
The Ghirardelli venue will go where Mission Tortilla Factory previously ran. The chocolate shop is set to open in late spring. The California chocolate shop is designed to be similar to another Ghirardelli location at Florida Downtown Disney in Walt Disney World.
Mission Tortilla Factory closed May 31,2011 after a 10 years in the park's Pacific Wharf area.Guests could get a free, warm, freshly made tortillas after a tour at the attraction.
Ghirardelli, a company that started in 1852 at the historic Ghirardelli Square in San Franscisco, plans to retain the San Francisco feel of the Pacific Wharf area of the park. This new shop will hand out free Ghirardelli Squares chocolate samples, as well as selling products. The fountain will feature popular sundaes topped with fresh hot fudge that is made daily. This park shop is the only Ghirardelli location in Orange Coounty. Another soda fountain and shop runs in San Diego, California while an outlet is in Ontario,California.

Living in the east bay, (San Franscisco is about 12 miles from my house, just get on the "BART" and travel under the water for about 10 minutes),been to Ghirardelli Square, the """chocolate sundaes topped with hot fudge"""...yummy...Dr Lee

History and Heritage:

Just in time to celebrate the 110th anniversary of Walt Disney's birthday on Dec.5, the Disney Gallery on Main Street, U.S.A. has opened a new exhibit showcasing one of Walt's favorite things- trains.

"All Aboard...A Grand Circle Tour of the Trains of Disney," which debuted Nov.12,2011 and runs through June 2012,showcases the artwork and inspiration for Disney railroads, trains and train attractions.

Walt was always fascinated with trains, begining with his early childhood in Marceline, Mo. As a teenager, he worked on a railroad selling fruit, drinks and newspapers, and his fascination grew while working with Studio cast members who were also railroad enthusiasts. This passion culminated in the construction of a 1/8th-scale "live steamer" at his home in Holmby Hills.

Even in his earliest drawings of Disneyland, Walt always surrounded the park with a train. Today, trains continue to be the focal point at Disney parks worldwide.

Jake is newest character at Disneyland Resort:

A new pirate showed up at the Disneyland Resort over the weekend, this time at Disney California Adventure.

Jake from the Disney Channel's animated series "Jake and the Neverland Pirates," is on board as the newest walk-around character.

In the show, Jake heads up a three-character band of child-like pirates who look for hidden treasure. The show takes place in Neverland, as featured in the Disney animated film "Peter Pan." Three characters from the film also appear in the show: Captain Hook, Mr. Smee and Tic-Tock the Crocodile; Captain Hook attempts to get treasure at the expense of Jake and his crew.

The cartoon series is part of the Disney Junior line-up of television programming aimed at childern ages 2-7.

As a child, I liked Peter Pan...Dr Lee

Christmas at Disney California Adventure:

Disney California Adventure gets a taste of Christmas as the Christmas Tree reaches for the sky near Ariel's Grotto in the Paradise Pier.
There aren't as many holiday decorations at Disney California Adventure as there are at Disneyland Park, but one of the most significant is the Christmas tree that sits outside Ariel's Grotto. The tree, along with decorations at Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta and other areas, are put up at the same time as those placed at the Disneyland Park. Next to the tree,at the base, sits a small town-square-like holiday setting where Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters visit to give guests a chance to take pictures with them.

I like the holidays at the Disneyland Resort...Dr Lee

Cars Land Mountains :

The Cadillac Mountains Range that serves as the backdrop for Cars Land at Disney California Adventure appears to be nearing completion.
Cars Land's Cadillac Mountain Range is nearing completion as the fictional town of Radiator Springs "springs up" in the foreground at Disney California Adventure. The land is based on the Disney/Pixar film "Cars." For the last two years, scaffolding was all you could see, and most of the scaffolding is gone.
In the foreground, the structures that will form part of the town of Radiator Springs are also taking shape. Most buildings will house either restaurants or souvenir shops.
The land, based on the Disney/Pixar film "Cars," will be home to three attractions. One is called "Radiator Springs Racers," visitors will travel into and around Cadillac Mountain Range.
At 12 acres, the land is the largest expansion of the theme park at the Disneyland Resort and is expected to open in 2012.

Restaurant Changes on Main Street, U.S.A.,at Disneyland Park:

We love it when our favorite spots expand, and there are some big changes coming for Main Street, U.S.A.,in 2012. Here's what you can look for:

The Blue Ribbon Bakery is moving and getting a new name:Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe, from the "Mary Poppins" song, "Oh, it's a jolly holiday with Mary..."The bakery moves to the Plaza Pavilion (at the top of Main Street, U.S.A.) with plans to open in early January. In addition to the bakery and espresso offerings, the new menu has some delicious new tastes, such as an Angus roast beef salad with blue cheese, a Caprese sandwich with tomatoes, Buffalo mozzarella, basil, butter lettuce and garlic aioli on toasted focaccia bread, and a classic pastrami reuben on rye.

Carnation Cafe is expanding with more indoor seating- the Blue Ribbon Bakery move is part of that expansion plan, as Carnation Cafe spreads out to take over the space and offer more air-conditioned seating. Work starts in January, and they'll have a new menu that will showcase longtime favorities (and we've heard it inculdes milkshakes).

Gibson Girl Ice Cream Parlor is getting a little makeover, too, and adding root beer, Coca-Cola and orange cream floats to the menu. And the block makeover wraps up at Resfreshment Corner-construction starts early next year.

Snow White's house for sale:

The home of Adriana Caselotti, the voice of Snow White from Walt Disney's first half full-length animated feature film "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," is for sale.

Caselotti designed and built the Larchmont Village home where she and her husband J. Dana Costigan lived. The Los Angeles community is near the Wilshire Country Club.

The home was built in 1976 and is now on the market for $995,000. It was originally put on the market nearly a year ago at $1.5 million, according to Kirk Gerou of Prudential Realty.

Gerou said he took over the listing two months ago and the price was reduced.

The two bedroom home is built primarily of cedar wood and has a definite Asian influence outside, including a wishing well in the Japanese Tea Garden styled exterior.

A tropical themed painting by Disney artist R. Mitchell is inside the living room and will stay with the house.

The classic film came out in 1938. Caselotti died in 1997. Gerou said her heirs decided to sell the house.

Disney's haunting Halloween history:

Today we know it as Mickey's Halloween Party- the only opportunity for guests of any age to dress up in halloween costumes at the Disneyland Resort. However, the popular after-hours trick-or-treat party was called Mickey's Halloween Treat! when it debuted in 1995. It ran for two years and then resurfaced at Disney California Adventure Park in 2005 as Mickey's Trick-or-Treat Party. The party moved back to Disneyland Park in 2010 and adopted its current name: Mickey's Halloween Party.

The Walt Disney World Resort has been hosting a similar event since 1995, called Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. What started as a one-night event at the Magic Kingdom quickly grew in popularity, transforming into multiple-night party that includes a pre-parade ride of the Headless Horseman from "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." As the sounds of the horse's clip-clops echo down Main Street, U.S.A.,Guests anxiously await a glimpse of the beheaded ghost as he searches for his head.

Disney villains:

Ursula: Villain? Little ol' me? Preposterous! Certainly I've been called some very unflattering names-"nasty,"-"witch"- but really, I'm simply misunderstood. I want what every merperson wants-happiness. Oh, and of course Triton's kingdom, too, but I'm worth it, aren't I?

Disneyland Mine Train:

Before there was Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, a roller coaster that hustles about, there was a battery-powered mine train that rolled along in that same stretch of Disneyland, an attraction that its former cast members fondly remember. Mine Train Thru Nature's Wonderland was the first major attraction added at the park following its summer 1955 opening.
"Walt's choice was, right after Disneyland's first summer, "What do we do next? We'll do a railroad. They're easy to design and build."
The train took guests on a journey through Rainbow Caverns; it eventually was expanded to include a trip through Nature's Wonderland including visits to Beaver Valley, Bear Country and the Painted Desert. The landscape was barren desert with large boulders; there were geysers, a wooden bridge over the water and large bears, one in the water with a fish in it's mouth. The men who worked the attraction as attraction hosts formed a club, the Order of the Red Handkerchiefs. Part of their costumes were red handkerchiefs, worn around the neck, then that costume was changed, and then this red handkerchief were carryed in their pockets. At first, the attraction hosts did live spiels, that was changed to a recording and the attraction hosts would focus on driving the trains.
This was Walt's Disney favorite park attraction: When he brought guests to Disneyland, he would take them to the Golden Horseshoe to watch the live show then have the guests take a mine-train ride.
Disney also used to walk the track to keep an eye on the auto-animatronic animals that populated the attraction. There are still signs of the long-gone attraction. Along the banks of The Rivers of America are some of the original tracks, coming out of two tunnels. Along the trail next to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad sits the pond that was home to Bear Country, along with the other side of the two tunnels.
Many of the buildings around the waiting line for Big Thunder are the same ones from the mine Train. That area is still referred to as the town of Rainbow Ridge, like it was for the original Mine Train attraction.
The attraction closed in 1977, because of the attraction's limited capacity and the park's desire for an attraction with more thrills. Also, there was rarely a line for Mine Train Thru Nature's Wonderland during its last years.
Once a year, cast members gather for dinner and to swap stories about working on the attraction. Because of the cast members dwindling numbers, it now allows anyone who worked on the west side of the park while the Mine train was opened to join. Early next month, in an Anahiem hotel, the stories will fly again.

Gingerbread House:

Each year, Entertainment designers create one of the most anticipated Halloween Time decorations-the gingerbread house in the Haunted Mansion Holiday attraction. And this year is no exception.
Every year is a new challenge to outdo last years creation. This year, something new was added, gumdrops that light up...taking our guests into the eerie world of Jack Skellington. The foundation of the 6-foot house is made of wood and wired for animation. It then goes to the Disneyland Resort Central Bakery, where it is meticulously adorned with 500 pounds of gingerbread, 10 yards of fondant and miles of frosting and oversized candies.
To commemorate the 11th season of the holiday overlay based on Tim Burton's "the Nightmare Before Christmas," a new line of pins are now avaiable. These pins are replicas of each gingerbread display from the past decade. The Haunted Mansion Hoilday Gingerbread Mystery Collection will debut Oct.8,2011.

His mission: to change the world

Twenty-five years ago, at the height of his career, Michael Jackson collaborated with "Star Wars" Producer George Lucas and "The Godfather" Director Francis Ford Coppola on a 3D space epic. Michael Jackson played the leader of an intergalactic brigade, who is captured after crash landing on a strange planet and forced to confront an evil spider-like queen(played by Anjelica Huston). Captain EO uses the power of music to subdue the queen's subjects and change their world for the better.

Michael Jackson contributed two songs for the feature, "We Are Here to Change the World" and "Another Part of Me." The film enjoyed an 11-year run in Tomorrowland, closing in 1997 to make way for "Honey, I Shrunk the Audience."

Most everyone that I have talked with has a story to tell about the morning of 9-11! Where they were, their feelings, their thoughts.

For myself,at approx. 10:30 a.m. New York time, those towers were falling.
Living in Southern California and going to work at Disneyland Club 33, we are 3 hours behind: 7:30 a.m. west coast time.
I was on the 7:21 a.m. metro link(commuter-train)from Riverside,California to Disneyland. Riding this metro-link many times,I was getting ready to take my morning nap. On any other day, commuters are checking e-mails, small talk, relaxing before a busy day, enjoying the moment!
As we were picking up commuters in Corona, California, approx. 7:45 a.m., there was this energy inside the train as we traveled through the Santa Ana Canyon. I was not aware of anything that morning,so I asked a fellow commuter what was going on. He told me, "that the twin towers in New York were falling down," and I asked ,"what movie are you talking about?"
I was informed by several other commuters and was speechless!!
Now as I arrived for work, my fellow commuters and I were stopped at the cast member entrance and told to return home."Disneyland" was closed!!!!
The out-bound train to Riverside normally has only a few commuters on it for most are at work. Not this day. It was standing room only, and I mean, like sardines. I stood for approx. 55 minutes all the way home. I was thinking, how was this train able to move with so many commuters on it?
Returning home, I turned on the TV and then got my American Flag and stood on a very busy corner waving old glory(started with just me,then grew to approx. 40 strangers standing with me). I served in the Army from 1971-1977, chaplin-asst.,and if needed, was ready to serve again.

Tell me what you were doing on that day, in the comment section at the bottom of this article... thanks,DR LEE

The Philosophy of Wine:

A philosophy professor stood before his class with some items in front of him. When the class began, without a word, he picked up a very large jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, each about two inches in diameter. He then asked the class if the jar was full. They all agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks.

He then asked the class again if the jar was full. They all agreed it was.

The professor picked up a bag of sand and poured it into the jar. The sand filled in between the pebbles.

He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous...yes!

The professor then produced a bottle of red wine from under the table and proceeded to pour the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty spaces bewteen the sand.

"Now," said the professor, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks being the important things, your family, your health and your childern-things that if everything else were lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the things that matter like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else...the small stuff.

If you put the sand in the jar first there would be no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

Take care of the rocks first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the wine represented.

The professor smiled,"I'm glad you asked. It goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a good bottle of wine.

The windows on Main Street, U.S.A.

Have you ever wondered about the names of the fictional business owners you see on the windows above the ground floor on Main Street, U.S.A.? It was a tradition started by Walt Disney when Disneyland opened on July 17,1955, to pay tribute to the men and women who were instrumental in the initial planning, design, construction and operation of the park.

The honor continues today for those who have made significant contributions to Disneyland Resort as Imagineers or Cast Members.

For the 50th anniversary of Disneyland Park, a window was dedicated to those who have helped keep alive Walt's vision for Disneyland.

Trivia: Who was the most recent recipient(s) to receive a window on Main Street, U.S.A.??

Wonder what my window would say, "Bartender to the stars"...DR LEE

ANSWNER:The Sherman Brothers, who wrote "it's a small world," were the most recent reipients of a window on Main Street, U.S.A., on March 10, 2010.

Disneyland Tips :

Having worked/retired from the Disneyland Resort, I have learned a few tips to make your stay a little better.

Free Commemorative Buttons...Go to City Hall on Main Street U.S.A., near the entrance, and if it is your birthday, first time or if you are celebrating something, ask the cast member there to give you a button. Now as you travel throughout the Disneyland Resort, other cast members and some guests will take note of your button.

Land by Land...When I play inside the Disneyland Resort, I plan what attractions I want to experience land by land. I usually start my day at Disneyland. Adventureland, then New Orleans Square, then Critter Country so on and so on. I try real hard not to spent my day walking from one land only to return because I forgot a attraction. I like to walk and stay fit, but I hate wasting time!!!

Wake Jose at the Tiki Room...If you arrive a few minutes early before the next show at the Tiki Room, you can ask the cast member there if your child can wake Jose to begin the show. Your child will be part of the show and given the opportunity to wake up the birds. This is always cute and fun.

Watch your Receipts...When I play at the Disneyland Resort, I always ask for my receipts after I have bought something. This is because, at the bottom of these receipts, certain stores offer discounts at certain times up to 25% off items. You never know what might be printed and what times these discounts apply.

Single Rider...While the fast pass is a great way to save time and plan your day, I have discovered a better way than the fast pass. Single Rider pass is available on a few attractions at the Disneyland Resort. Indian Jones and Splash Mountain are in Disneyland Park and Grizzly River Run,SCREAMIN and Soarin are located in Disney's California Adventure Park.Just a quick note here, check daily with City Hall about any changes. Simply walk up and ask for a single rider pass,do not stand in line. After this pass is given to you, the cast member for that attraction will show you were to stand. There is always a need for single riders.

Toy Story Parking, the Blue Bus...When I again play at the Disneyland Resort, I always like to park at the Toy Story Parking. Located near the corners of Harbor and Katilla, across the street from the Hilton on Katilla, these buses are air-conditioned/heated and are every few minutes when arriving/departing.

Eat a "Big Breakfast" before entering the Disneyland Resort...I like to have a bowl of oatmeal, honey, banana and orange juice before I play at the Disneyland Resort.
I have found, that eating a large breakfast, gives me energy through-out my stay and I can drink water and likely skip lunch all together. About 4p.m. I like to buy a nice dinner, like in Downtown Disney(Naples, pizza, yummy), Ariel's Grotto, Blue Bayou,French Market or Redd Rockett's Pizza Port.
I have enjoyed dinner at Club 33, however, my money tree isn't that big!

Fireworks at 9:30p.m....Most will agree, that the Disneyland Resort by far has the best fireworks at 9:30p.m. over Sleeping Beauty's Castle. And most will agree, that standing in front of Sleeping Beauty's Castle is a great place to see this show. However, that being saided, would you like to know were I like to see this show and you can also. Stand near "it's a small world" attraction(near Micky's ToonTown entrance). Here, you still can hear "SOME" of the soundtrack, but what you will feel is the energy, noise and power of this show. It's amazing...

Hope this will help you on your next visit...Dr Lee aka

Buena Vista Street:

Disney California Adventure Park is reaching another major milestone in the on going expansion. On Monday, August 29, 2011, the Sunshine Plaza area will close to allow crews to start the transformation of the current park entry into Buena Vista Street, reminiscent of what Walt Disney encountered when he first arrived in California in the 1920's.
While the shops will close to make way for Buena Vista Street, guests will continue to enter the park through the new Pan-Pacific Auditorium-inspired turnstiles and follow a temporary walkway which will feature renderings of the future Disney California Adventure Park and connect the turnstiles with the Condor Flats area. This area will be the temporary entrance and exit for guests during the transformation of the former main entrance stores to Buena Vista Street.
This entry and exit location will remain in place until Buena Vista Street opens in 2012.

Cast Members Canoe Races:

The annual Cast Canoe Races at Disneyland began in 1963 when employees, who Walt Disney calls cast members, challenged one another to a race.

Nearly 50 years later, the event has evolved into a gathering with more than 600 Disney cast members,on 72 teams rowing around the Rivers of America in canoes from Davy Crochett's Explorer Canoes.

At dawn on Wednesdays, before the park opens, 12 teams in 3 divisions competed for bragging rights and medals in front of a crowd of 250 family members and friends.

The 4 finalist teams in each division-men, women and coed- were comprised of 8 to 10 rowers per canoe. The teams started and finished at the Davy Crockett's Explorer Canoes dock, one at a time, rowing the quarter-mile lap around Pirate's Lair on Tom Sawyer Island. The teams were timed.

Cast members of the Davy Crockett's Explorer Canoes swept the divisions, taking first in the men's,women's and coed divisions. The men's team won it's 12th title by circling the course in 4 minutes,6.72 seconds; the women finished in 4 minutes,38.09 seconds, while the coed winners won in 4 minutes, 21.20 seconds.

Teams practice before the park opens to guests.

Best Buy, Gadget Magic:

If you've ever gone on vacation and realized you forgot some critical gadget or cord, Best Buy aims to help you.
The next time you stroll Downtown Disney you might spot two new installations-a pair of Best Buy vending machines selling various device chargers, headphones and even iPods.
The kiosks, which have the moniker "Gadget Magic," carry a hodgepodge of goodies vacationing families might want, need or forgot at home, from the new "New Super Mario Bros." game for the Nintendo DS to every kind of iPod and various headphones, earbuds or iPhone cases. There is even a 3G moblie hotspot out of contract available through the kiosks.
The new self-service kiosks went up in June and put Downtown Disney among 150 locations where the Best Buy kiosks have been installed in the last three years, including college campuses, train stations and airports. Kiosk prices are the same as at Best Buy stores and Downtown Disney is among 22 locations in California.

Disney California Adventure:

Another remnant of the original concept of Disneyland California Adventure has been removed as part of the theme park's $1-billion makeover.
The classic passenger train, on the west side of Sunshine Plaza near Condor Falls, was recently removed with the aid of a 90-ton crane.
The California Zephyr was removed overnight on August 5,2011, put on a flat bed truck and donated to the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola, California.
Part of California Adventure Park since the theme park opened in 2001, the train operated as an ice cream shop and a bakery. Walt Disney's love of trains made this donation a perfect fit.
While the train cars were replicas, the cab used to be an operational locomotive that was part of the famous train line that originally ran from 1949 to 1970. The train line was 2,438 miles long and ran from Chicago to Emeryville, California.
The number on the cab of the locomotive was 804-A, a nod to the last locomotive to lead a westbound California Zephyr into Oakland, California on March 20, 1970.

I love trains also, how about you????? DR LEE

side note...The Golden Gate Bridge that was at the entrance has also been removed, and those famous letters out front of the entrance to Disney California Adventure that spelled "CALIFORNIA" are now history.

The Story behind Fantasyland's Crowning Jewel:

"It's a world of laughter,a world of tears,it's a world of hopes and a world of fears..." These lyrics bring to mind one of the world's best-loved Theme Park attractions-and this years's 45th anniversary celebration of Disneyland's "it's a small world" attraction is in full swing with colorful commemorative pins, brand-new books, and one very special art exhibit.

Originally, Walt Disney was approached by Pepsi to create the attraction in honor of UNICEF for the 1964 World's Fair-one of several attractions tested at the Fair and later reconstructed at Disneyland Park. Walt Disney thought it was a great idea and told the Imagineers they had apporximately six months to built it, which was a very short timeframe for the work. After several art directors took a shot at what it might look like, Walt Disney gave Mary Blair a call. Her chirldern's books from the early 1940s were perfect for this. She came out and did all the concept renderings. [Imagineer] Rolly Crump and a few other model builders were tapped to interpret her artwork into this immersive 3D world...it was very important that the set pieces looked exactly as she designed them.

Everyone on the team had a hand in this project-including her mother, Leota Toombs, aka, the Haunted Mansion's Madame Leota. Leota and Harriet Burns were very involved in building the models and Joyce Carlson was the lead on painting the dolls, toys, and fun little patterns. They used a paper-mache finish on the pieces so they looked very childlike-like a pinata. Imagineer/animator Marc Davis created many of the character vignettes, while his wife, Alice Davis, supervised the costume design and was meticulous in making sure each costume was accurate and detailed while maintaining the same quality as Mary's work.

When the attraction was rebuilt at Disneyland,it exceeded the size of its World Fair counterpart. Rolly added, expanded, and moved various scenes out of order-like the rain forest in South America. Walt Disney tasked him with designing a Rube Goldberg-style facade for the exterior (not previously in the New York World's Fair) because he [Rolly] loved making whirlgigs and mobiles. The Tower of the Four Winds(a focal point in the New York attraction)was replaced by Rolly's smiling-faced clock tower, which blended perfectly with Mary's whimsical designs.

"it's a small world" opened in Disneyland on May 28,1966, and continues to delight Guests on what Walt Disney used to call-Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort,Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland. It's a true symbol of international unity with a positive message of peace...and that childern worldwide have so much in common. The adult appeal lies in the color palette and style of Mary's work-it's contemporary yet joyful and childlike. She has such a distinctive way of doing that.It really appeals to everyone.

Now through October 31,2011 at Disneyland Resort, guests can experience the timeless magic of Mary's work at the Disney Gallery on Main Street, U.S.A. The show features 45 pieces and includes a cross-section of Mary's art for Studio, movie shorts, and WED [Imagineering]

Those with special "small world" memories can collect the limited-edition, commemorative pin featuring the childern of the world as a spinner element(to be released at the D23 Expo, August 19,2011) and several new childern's books that include art inspired by the attraction, a song CD, and more.

Fun Facts You Might Not Know About "it's a small world"...

1...The attraction features over 300 Audio-Animatronics figures of international childern, with more than 250 toys and 80 animated props.

2...New to the attraction are 29 popular Disney and Disney-Pixar characters(as costumed dolls) in the countries or regions where their stories take place. They include: Woody and Jessie(Spirit of America), Aladdin and Jasmine(Middle East), Mulan and Mushu(Asia), Ariel and Flounder(Pacific Islands), Alice and the White Rabbit(Great Britain), Lilo and Stitch(Pacific Islands/Hawaii), and Donald Duck,Panchito, and Jose Carioca(South America).

3...Imagineers carefully integrated the newly added characters to reflect the same bold, childlike designs of Mary Blair, the art director responsible for designing the look and feel of the original attraction.

4...To reflect the lyrics"There is just one moon and one golden sun", Imagineers designed a stylized sun or moon within each country's scene.

5...The Sherman Brothers' hit song was originally written as a slow ballad-until Walt Disney insisted they speed it up and make it "pepper."

The sweet scent of new Orleans:

Can you smell something sweet in the air in New Orleans Square? No, it's not the Monte Cristo sandwiches or the mint juleps. That fragrant aroma is wafting from the recently opened Mlle.Antoinette's Parfumerie. The store is filled with fragrances for men and women from many of today's top designers, including Givenchy, Guerlain, Christian Dior, Acqua di Parma and Emilio Pucci. Three scents are Disney-exclusive and can only be found at Disney parks.

What's old is new again:

The store may be new, but its history dates back to the opening of New Orleans Square. When the store first opened in 1966-under the same name-guests were able to create their own unique scents in a glass bottle with the shop's name on it. The store closed in 1996 and became Jewel of Orleans, an estate jewelry shop.
Many of the original fixtures are still in place, including a grand chandelier that was discovered by Lillian Disney, Walt Disney's wife. during one of her antique shopping excursions. The mirrors behind the counter are the original mirrors that were hand painted by Disney Legend Dorothea Redmond. The images of birds and flowers were reverse painted, a technique in which the design is painted onto the back of the glass and affixed to the mirror.

History and Heritage:

Celebrating 45 years New Orleans-style:

Walt Disney and New Orleans Mayor Victor Schiro dedicated New Orleans Square on July 24, 1966, making it the only part of Disneyland Park to be designed after an actual city. Walt was quite fond of New Orleans and even found the windup mechanical bird that would be the inspiration for Audio-Animatronics figures during his travels to the Southern city. Walt passed away before his plans for an apartment above New Orleans Square materialized, and the space was later turned into The Disney Gallery. In 2008, Walt's original vision was realized with the opening of the Disneyland Dream Suite.

Trivia: New Orleans Square is home to Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean, two famous Disneyland Park attractions. Neither attraction debuted when the land opened in 1966. Which attraction opened first and on what day ??

answer to Trivia question...Pirates of the Caribbean opened first on March 18, 1967, followed by Haunted Mansion on August 9, 1969.

A fond farewell to Betty and Wally:

Cast members who worked with Disney Legends Wally Boag and Betty Taylor during their nearly 30 years and 40,000 performances of the Golden Horseshoe Revue At Disneyland Park have fond memories of the two dedicated entertainers who passed away just one day apart on June 3-4.
Betty, who played Sluefoot Sue-the charming, spunky leader of a troupe of western dance hall girls-performed in nearly 45,000 productions of the revue, beginning in 1956 until her retirement in 1987.
Wally, who retired in 1982, played her character's sweetheart, Pecos Bill. He also later appeared on such television shows as the original "Mickey Mouse Club" and "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color," as well as movies, including "The Absent-Minded Professor" and "The Love Bug." Betty was 91 when she passed away, Wally was 90.
After winning the role of Pecos Bill, Wally quickly became one of Walt Disney's favorite comedic actors.
It's been more than 25 years since their final curtain, however, their legacy will live on.

FUN FACT: Wally Boag provided the voice of the Audio-Animatronics parrot Jose in Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room.

Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams and the hard facts which have created America...with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world."

Bar Humor:

life is about balance, like a clean suit and a dirty martini...

For those who do not understand what a "Dirty Martini" is, let me explain. Having been the bartender of Club 33 and at Mr Stox (Anahiem,Ca. check out their web page,mrstox.com)it is usually either gin or vodka, shaken or stirred in a shaker with lots of ice cubes. Martini is poured into a martini glass which has been chilled. Once in the martini glass, this drink is clear and very cold.
To make it "dirty," the bartender now pours olive juice into this martini. Some guests want their martini little dirty, while others want "extra dirty, more olive juice. Now the bartender will add one or two green olives to this martini and is now served to the guests.

Trader Sam's sets up shop:

The moment you step foot into Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar and hear the bartender yell "Shipwreck" you instantly realize this isn't just any ordinary bar.
After many years as a successful "witch doctor," word of Sam's exotic elixirs spread and he decided there was enough demand to open up a bar that would be convenient for weary travelers. He selected the lush jungle area of the Disneyland Hotel to set up shop.
Sam hired retired and off-duty Jungle Cruise skippers-known for their "skipper humor"-to maintain his bar, and Sam will pay tribute to them by selecting a Skipper of the Year. This year's honoree is Gerry York.
Personal photographs of Trader Sam along with mementos from his travels line the walls of the intimate space. Many of the artifacts were inspired by Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room,Indiana Jones Adventure, the Tower of Terror at Tokyo DisneySea and the 1954 Disney film classic, "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
While the Polynesian drinks and menu items, such as the Kahlua Pork Flatbread and the Pu Pu Platter are delightful, it's the small details that bring the bar to life. Some artifacts have found their way from the now-closed Adventure's Club at the Walt Disney World resort, such as the ship in the glass bottle. Other artifacts include a photo of Walt Disney and his wife, Lillian,on a trip south of the border and another show former Jungle Cruise Skipper John Lasseter.

Know before you go:
Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar is open 11:30a.m.-1:30a.m. After 8p.m., only guests ages 21 years and above are allowed inside the bar area. There is live entertainment on the patio from 6 p.m.- 10p.m. nightly.

History & Heritage:

A primeval journey from New York World's Fair to Disneyland Park.

After its display at the 1964-65 New York World's Fair, The Primeval World Diorama opened in 1966 at Disneyland park. At the time of its debut, it was heralded as the world's longest diorama, and it was the only portion of the Ford Magic Skyway attraction from the fair to survive. Walt Disney had plans to transfer the entire attraction, but Ford didn't want to sponsor it beyond the fair. Walt thought the dinosaurs had too much potential to simply get rid of the attraction and decided to transfer them to Disneyland. The question was: where to put them?

Meanwhile, the growth of Disneyland staff necessitated the building of a new administration building. Walt was initially hesitant as he was focused on enhancing his park for the guests. Walt saw the opportunity to accomplish two goals at once. The dinosaurs would have a home, and the new administration building would benefit guests by doubling as the show building for the Primeval World.

Prepare for take-off, Goofy's Sky School is set to take flight. For those who are not "chicken", there will be plenty of chickens...and wacky antics...aboard Goofy's Sky School. And with Goofy as the flight instructor, this crazy coaster should live up to its billing. The attraction is inspired by Disney's "How To" cartoons series of the 1940s and 1950s.
Guests staying at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa will have a birds-eye view of Goofy's Sky School as the attraction sits just south of the hotel in Paradise Pier. The Little Mermaid, Ariel's Undersea Adventure:

This Disney California Adventure Park major attraction not only is a new spectacular jewel in the transformation of Paradise Pier, but it will be one of the most heartwarming attractions ever to sing its way into guest's hearts-another great reason why this will be a "soundsational" summer at the Disneyland Resort.
From the moment guests enter the queue, they will be serenaded by a medley of songs from the 1989 blockbuster," The Little Mermaid," one of the most beloved Disney films of all time.
Scuttle, the seagull, will greet guests as they pass throuh the broken hull of a shipwreck before they enter Ariel's Grotto and go under the sea to become part of Ariel's world on the ocean floor. Imagineers are especially proud of Ariel's hair as her mane has been animated to appear underwater, suspended and floating, similar to how her hair is always in motion in the film.
Ursula, the evil sea witch, plays a big role in the story. Ursula's Audio-Animatronics figure is 12 feet wide and 7.5 feet tall. She is designed with a squash and stretch function in her torso so that she can bounce along with the music, making her even more bewitching.
Innovative technological advancements and clever special effects help bring this new attraction to life. It is immersive, involved and full of characters from the film. The experience is about fun and the hope is that guests will exit the attraction with huge smiles on their faces...or tears of joy.

Some Facts:

...The attraction experience is approximately 5 1/2 minutes from the time guests load the clam shell to the time they exit the clam shell

...If King Triton looks familiar atop the attraction's main archway, it's because this is the same Triton who once appeared near "The Little Mermaid" meet-and-greet area in Fantasyland

...This attraction also will be included in the new Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort where it will be called "Under the Sea-Journey of the Little Mermaid," opening at a later date

...There are 184 Audio-Animatronics characters in the attraction, including the spinning starfish

Broadcast Services:

While watching " Extreme Makeover Home Edition" you realize that the family featured is enjoying themselves at Disneyland while their dream home is being built. Or perhaps you see a commercial promoting Star Tours-The Adventures Continue at Disneyland or listening to Mark & Kristin of KOST 103.5 FM broadcast live from Sleeping Beauty Castle. Perhaps your family watches the TV special, Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade. Ever wonder who is behind the scenes of those projects? That team is Broadcast Services and they are right in our backyard.
Broadcast Services provides a specialized service for our Disney partners. From initial project request to the completion of the final product, this team of cast members plan project logistics for any professional camera crew that comes to shoot at the Disneyland Resort. Whether it's staying on budget, hiring a jib camera operator or handling talent, this team manages all of the preplanning work.
Once a project is accepted, it is assign to a production manager that determines a shooting schedule and works closely with a Broadcast logistics manager. Together, they set up all the shooting elements in our theme parks, always keeping our guests in mind. Broadcast Services want to create minimal impact on these guests and their stay in the theme parks.
Once a project is planned, a crew tapes all required shots, whether it's a commercial, a scripted TV segment, live-to-tape TV special or B-ROLL ( footage used to complete an edited piece). With every detail already planned out, the team is perpared to capture the moments that soon air on TV. And those billboards or magazine ads? Those logistics are arranged by this team as well.
Broadcast Services also deals with the lighting and technical expertise needed to support all projects. Anything you see that takes place at the resort comes through this team. That could be a 'Dancing with the Stars' segment, a live weather hit on ABC or the video updates at Blue Sky Cellar. Without this teams help, these projects would not become reality.
After the footage has been utilized, what Happens then? Much of it is edited and downloaded into Media Asset Management Systems. Staff Editor and Department Archivist teams keep track of all department footage which traces back to the construction of Disneyland itself. Then, when clients are producing a project and need additional footage to tell the story, they request specific footage to insert as a background to a voiceover or to enhance a specific message.
So whether it's for TV production or radio remotes, Broadcast Services plays an important role in the success of thousands of projects a year used to market the Resort. It takes a lot of planning, but to them,it's just show business!

Hawaiian culture and traditions:

This August, Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa located in Ko Olina on the island of O'ahu, will open its doors to the public. In anticipation of the opening, here are a few facts about Hawaii.

Lei greetings of aloha:

Lei is a Hawaiian word for garland or wreath and one of the most recognizable symbols of aloha. To the islanders, the lei is more than a string of flowers- it represents a deep and abiding part of the Hawaiian culture.
During the "Boat Days" of the early 1900s, lei vendors lined the pier at Aloha Tower to welcome visitors to the islands. It is saided that departing visitors would throw their lei into the sea in hopes that, like the lei, they too would return to the islands again someday.
A lei is created to be given to another for a special reason and as a sign of affection. It is a tradition to present a lei to greet, honor, celebrate, congratulate and express love to others for many occasions including birthdays, anniversaries, retirement, graduations or weddings. Different lei material have different uses and significance in Hawaiian culture. A hula dancer may wear a lei bearing symbolism for the story or the island for which the song was written. For expectant mothers, only open lei are appropriate. Never present a pregnant woman with a closed lei.
Lei may be maded of fresh flowers and foliage such as ti leaves, ferns, vines or seeds. More permanent and long lasting lei may be created fron shells, kukui nuts, feathers or even paper and silk.
When being presented a lei, the receiver should acknowledge the presenter by standing still and bending slightly if needed so the person can easily place the lei over the neck. The proper way to wear a lei is draped over the neck and shoulders, hanging in front and back. Should the lei prove too fragrant for the recipient, it is acceptable to place it nicely in an area where it may be more appreciated from a distance.
Wearers should be mindful when discarding a lei as it should never be discarded casually or in the trash. If not kept as a keepsake, traditionally, florals or foliage should be returned to the earth after removing the string.

Common Hawaiian words and phrases:

Aloha- greetings, hello,goodbye, affection, love

Aloha kakahiaka- good morning

Aloha 'auinala- good afternoon

Aloha ahiahi- good evening

Plural word for lei: lei (same as singular)

Aloha, see you in Hawaii...DR LEE

May 28,1966- 'it's a small world' opens at Disneyland Park:

Walt Disney's vision of brotherhood and friendship was brought to life by Disney Legend Mary Blair for the 1964 New York World's Fair. When the attraction was moved to Disneyland Park in 1966, Mary also designed the fanciful external facade. The soundtrack "it's a small world" was written by Richard and Robert Sherman from Walt's clear instructions-that the song represent childern as the light of the future, worldwide. The song may be the catchiest Disney attraction theme song of all time, also enjoyed by visitors to the Walt Disney World Resort, Tokyo Disney Resort, Disneyland Paris and the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.

Disney's Alaskan "True Life Adventures":

When the Disney Wonder began cruising to Alaska on May 3, 2011, it wasn't the first time Disney has had a presence in the state.
There are several movies, documentaries and made-for-TV shows that Disney has made about or set in Alaska.

Most prominent are "Seal Lsland" (1948) and "The Alaskan Eskimo" (1953), both crafted from footage taken by Disney Legends Alfred and Elma Milotte, a husband-and-wife team of nature photographers.

"Seal Island" was the first "True-Life Adventure" and won the Academy Award for Best Two-Reel Documentery Short Subject of 1948. When Walt Disney saw the Milottes' Alasken wildlife footage, he commissioned them to film more, which they did over a year's time in 1947. Walt even traveled to Alaska in August 1947 with his daughter, Sharon, to check in on the Milottes' filming. Captivated by the footage of fur seals off the Alaskan coast, Walt used it to create the 27-minute "Seal Island."

"The Alaskan Eskimo" was the first of many People and Places featurettes and also was developed from the Milotte footage of 1947. It won the Academy Award for Best Documentery Short Subject of 1953.

"A Salute to Alaska"-1967

" A Salute to Alaska" marked Walt Disney's final introduction as the host of his Wonderful World of Color TV series. " A Salute to Alaska" was narrated by Ludwig von Drake and featured figures from Alaska's history including Czarina Anna Ivanovna, Peter the Great, Vitus Bering, and William Seward, all animated by Ward Kimball. Three 16mm films were released in 1973 from footage in " A Salute to Alaska': How Alaska Joined the World, Alaska's Bush Pilot Heritage, and The Alaskan Gold Rush.
