When the USA Volleyball Teams visited Disneyland Park July 17,2012 before leaving for London Olympics, it was just the lastest in Disney's tradition of hosting Olympic athletes.
In 1964, Disneyland hosted more than 400 U.S. athletes heading to Japan for the Summer Olympics. Events included a tribute show, featuring Bob Hope and a cast of Hollywood stars. During the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Disneyland hosted thousands of athletes, officials and dignitaries from more than 140 nations. And in 1988, Disneyland hosted a send-off for members of team USA as they prepared to leave for the Olympics in Seoul, Kores. Following the games, we saluted our returning Olympians with an event featuring Vice President George H.W. Bush.
But perhaps the biggest splash was in October 2004. That's when Cast Members constructed an Olympic-size pool in less than 30 hours so that Olympic gold medalist swimmers Michael Phelps, Ian Crocker and Lenny Krayzelburg could literally swim down Main Street, U.S.A.
