Space Mountain celebrates 35 years:
Space Mountain opened at Disneyland Park on May 27,1977,invigorating the park with a second roller coaster-style attraction (after Matterhorn Bobsleds, which opened in 1959).
The idea for the attraction originated in the mid-1960s, during Walt Disney's lifetime, as a way to energize Tomorrowland. The project was shelved until the successful launch of Space Mountain at Walt Disney World Resort in 1975.
Along with this attraction, the complex at Disneyland Park opened with Space Stage, Space Place quick-service restaurant and Starcade. Six of the original seven Mercury astronauts attended Space Mountain's opening-Scott Carpenter, Gorden Cooper, U.S. Sen. John Glenn, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton. In 2003, Space mountain closed for a two-year refurbishment and reopened for Disneyland's 50th Anniversary in July 2005 with new music by composer Michael Giacchino, new special effects and a new storyline. Other transformations came with Rockin' Space Mountain, which premiered Grad Nite 2006, and Space Mountain: Ghost Galaxy, which debuted for Halloween Time 2009.
Space Mountain is great...Dr Lee
